Initial Response v.3

Finally Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (The Rundown, Walking Tall) has decided to stop making ridiculously bad kids movies (for now) and go back to what he should be doing….action movies. Though this isn’t that good of a movie it was nice seeing him be a badass and an action star. Hopefully he’ll be doing more roles like this and maybe his role in Fast Five, the fifth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, will get him more scripts. I’m hoping Sylvester Stallone will hit him up for one of the sequels to The Expendables.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

I can’t believe it took me until this past Saturday to watch this movie. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend the film, it’s the best adaptation of a Roald Dahl book since James and The Giant Peach…. Tim Burton’s Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was HORRIBLE!

The fact that this movie knows that it is supposed to be campy and a traditional B-Movie makes the film enjoyable as long as you are aware of that as well. Directed by Alexander Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension), I expected the film to be overly gory and hard to watch. Not so much since the director knew not to make it more than what it was and it’s comes to no surprise that a sequel is in the works. If you don’t have a weak stomach it’s worth a viewing.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

As soon as the music started for the Universal logo I completely fell in love with this movie and my love for the film grew more and more as the actual movie started playing. WATCH THIS! I can not stress that enough. Michael Cera has made some bad movies since his breakout role in Superbad but it had to be fate for him to become an actor because he was definitely made to play this role.

The Town

Ben Affleck’s second directorial feature (Gone Baby Gone) is once again a well acted and well-directed film and again filmed in his home town of Boston. Great performances by the entire cast and Jeremy Renner (S.W.A.T., The Hurt Locker) was again nominated for his performance but this time for a supporting role.

The Expendables

A guy movie. It’s a nostalgia film starring the action stars we grew up with mixed with the new generation. Though the movie I’ll admit wasn’t great it was just awesome to see all these guys in a film together. Though there were a couple of scenes that were just kind of awkward (like Mickey Rourke crying), the film sticks to what it needs to be…a bunch of big guys with big guns killing and a high death rate. The way this franchise is set up it can go on for a very long time even if Stallone steps down eventually and somebody else takes the reigns. Just keep putting action stars in a film together and the audience will be there.

Movies I’ve seen recently for the first time….

Let Me In

The best vampire movie I’ve seen (not counting the original french film) since Blade, and if you don’t want to count comic book movies then I would say Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Starring Chloe Grace Moretz (played Hit Girl in Kick-Ass) who is pretty much the anti-Dakota Fanning (Push, The Twilight Saga). If these two vampires fought, Dakota would lose before anyone knew something was going on. Watch this movie! The love story between the two main characters in this is so much more believable than in the The Twilight Saga (I am not comparing it to the books at all but just the films as that is my only knowledge of the series) and these kids are only 12.

Ong Bak 3

The final installment of the Ong-Bak Trilogy. The first one is still the best and I actually dozed off for a little while around the middle of the movie as it kinda dragged. Fight scenes are great but I keep waiting for him to do a movie on the level of The Protector. If you’re a fan of Tony Jaa, watch it.

One of Bruce Willis’ best films. The movie just relishes on the fact that these actors have established themselves deep into Hollywood history and shows off how they can not necessarily get better with age but can kick just the same amount of ass now as they did back in the day. Everyone is absolutely amazing in this and at no point does the movie or the actors try to be more than they need to be. Multiple viewings of this is a must, in fact I’ve already seen it 3 times and am now wanting to stick in the Blu-ray once again for another viewing.

Originally written for Tom Cruise but he dropped out and instead of replacing him with another actor they decided to rewrite it for a female character and as far as action heroines go in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, the Lara Croft films) is the only actress that can pull it off and she does it again in this. Written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium), there’s even sort of a twist in the movie that was happily unexpected. The movie contains plot points and turns you don’t see in films but in tv series which I never understood. Don’t you hate it when watching a movie and you’re anxiously expecting something terrible/drastic to happen like they actually fail at stopping something? This doesn’t really go along those lines but it’s freaking awesome and I highly recommend watching the Director’s Cut. So excited to see sequels! Please let this happen!

The Social Network

Was curious as to how they were going to make a movie about Facebook but they did and it was enjoyable and informative. Never knew that the Napster guy (played by Justin Timberlake) was part owner. Starring a lot of up and coming actors, this brings hope to some great performances that are ahead of us from these Hollywood youngsters.

At one point in the movie I stopped paying attention and had to restart the film as I had no idea what was going on. If you don’t pay close attention you won’t realize what has been happening all along and the ending will confuse you. I enjoy watching all 3 of these actors perform but after watching the movie I felt like that was cool and all but the ending/climax made me wonder why the movie was made at all. It was pretty much just watching great actor’s perform great for no reason, like an audition for some other movie.

Movies I’ve recently seen for the first time……

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Thought it was as good as the first one. Shia LaBeouf was actually bearable in this one and Michael Douglas is perfect again bringing back Gordon Gekko to the big screen. There’s even a surprise cameo that works great.

The Invention of Lying

Ricky Gervais is hilarious, no other way to put it. The first scene we get with Jennifer Garner (Catch & Release) was hysterical. The second half of the movie kind of dragged though.

The Blind Side

It’s a feel good sports movie and it does just that. Sandra Bullock (The Proposal) is still a very attractive woman who always seems to find a way back into the spotlight when her star begins to fade. Great performances all around. The nominations all make sense now.

Robin Hood

Russell Crowe & Ridley Scott team up again to the point where I actually have to think to recall all the films they’ve done together. It was alright, nowhere near the quality of say Gladiator or American Gangster but gives us a different perspective of the legend we are all aware of. Actually hope they do a sequel.

Ashton Kutcher should only stick to playing idiots like in ‘That 70s Show’ & Dude, Where’s My Car? Horrible movie and Katherine Heigl (Under Siege 2) keeps playing the same character in everything recently.

Good movie about jewish brothers who help their kinsmen during the Holocaust. Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) is at the top of his game in this film.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

Funny movie from the guys behind Talladega Nights & Stepbrothers. A better film then the latter with a great cameo by Will Ferrell.

Imagine That

Eddie Murphy (Beverly Hills Cop) needs to return to his R-rated comedies immediately.

It just happens to be my favorite, and I order it with a tequila and lime in every dive I go to in this country. And honestly, that is the best it’s ever been anywhere. In fact, it’s too good. It’s so good that when I’m finished, I’ll pay my check, walk straight into the kitchen and shoot the cook. Because that’s what I do. I restore the balance to this country. And that is what I would like from you right now. Help keep the balance by pulling the trigger.”

“Every search for a hero must begin with something which every hero requires, a villain.”

“You know what you get for being a hero? Nothin’. You get shot at. You get a little pat on the back, blah, blah, blah, attaboy. You get divorced. Your wife can’t remember your last name. Your kids don’t want to talk to you. You get to eat a lot of meals by yourself. Trust me, kid, nobody wants to be that guy.”

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

“The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it, for the first time, with a sense of hope. Because if a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too.”

The Hangover

“What do tigers dream of when they take their little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit? Don’t you worry your pretty striped head, we’re gonna get you back to Tyson and your cozy tiger bed. And then we’re gonna find our best friend Doug, and then we’re gonna give him a best friend hug. Doug, Doug, oh, Doug, Dougie, Dougie, Doug, Doug! But if he’s been murdered by crystal meth tweakers….well then we’re shit out of luck.”
